Garbage Disposal Service FAQ

Garbage Disposal Service — common questions

Why is my disposal humming but not spinning?+

It's jammed. Turn it off, use the hex key in the bottom to free the flywheel, then hit the reset button. If it hums after that, the motor is done.

How long should a garbage disposal last?+

A quality 3/4 or 1 HP unit typically lasts 10-15 years. Cheap 1/3 HP units are often replaced in 5-7.

What can't I put down the disposal?+

Fibrous stuff (celery, corn husks, potato skins in bulk), grease, coffee grounds, and bones. Those are the top killers.

Can you install a disposal on a septic system?+

Yes, with a septic-safe model. It grinds finer and includes bio-injection to help the tank digest food waste.

My disposal is leaking — repair or replace?+

Leaking from the top: usually a sink flange reseal. Leaking from the bottom of the unit: replace it. The bottom seal fails and it's not economical to rebuild.

Do you handle the electrical for a new install?+

For a like-for-like swap under an existing outlet, yes. New circuits or hardwired conversions we coordinate with an electrician.
